The recently opened DEPO814 is a new concept providing the unity of food, design, music and cultural happenings sitting only a few minutes’ walk from Southern railway Station. DEPO814 operates as a canteen for the employees working in the building during daytime and a bar at night on the ground floor of a newly built office building located in Central Buda.
DEPO814 concerned the development of an overall concept where the menu, the food as offered, the music and think tank events as desired, the graphic language and the interior should all bind together. What is more, the project combines the retail space where all guests can bring their furniture, books, etc. or buy the objects used on the spot.
From the very start of the project, the design development was put in the shop window, and therefore, DEPO814 features four temporary projects through winter time under the name of Unpacking Fest. Week by week a new installation was built by an emerging contemporary designer team.
The very first installation was made by Dóra Fónagy in collaboration with numbernow architects Wanda Reich, Noémi Varga and graphic designer Ábris Gryllus, which created an urban cosmic atmosphere by transforming all the furniture to silhouette with the usage of bubble wrap. Unpacking Fest 0.1 installation has been created with an emphasis on uncertainty and it has been achieved by shedding any feel of custom or exclusivity; it is truly a place where everybody can enjoy the informal environment and the humour behind it.The ambition was to create an one-night installation with unfinished layout on first glade, to turn the existing architectural language and to get a strong sense of informal and easygoing atmosphere.
Raw design allowed witty graphic language: the well known UPS stickers were turn into DEPO language with the use of basic information about the place. The bar’s prominent position at the gateway to the heart of Budapest presented a unique opportunity to showcase the best of Hungarian design talent and redefinition of inspirational space.
